Bridal Hair Dos:

  • Choose a style that will compliment the cut and shape of your face.
  • Round faces look best with “up-dos” and sleek long styles like half up and half down. Where as face shapes that are long look best with a hairstyle that is wider and has volume.
  • Consider what would be more comfortable; your hair up or down, curly or straight, all pulled back or some wisps framing your face?
  • Pick a tiara and veil that compliments your hairdo, not hide it.
  • Consider hair pins, combs and small hair grips with crystals or gems as an alternative for your hair if you do not want to wear a tiara. These have a stunning effect and are a little different.
  • Have a major consultation with your stylist approximately 6 months before the wedding. During your consultation, determine where you want to wear the veil; over your hairstyle or sitting at the back of your head, under a mass or curls or bun.
  • If you have a floor-length veil, make sure your hairstyle is sturdy enough to hold its shape until you take the veil off.
  • Ask your stylist if you need to grow your hair longer for your desired style.
  • As stylists work best in their own environment, with their own tools, it is best to have your bridal-party meet at the salon.
  • Consider the time of day when choosing your hairstyle. Loose styles are best for informal or daytime weddings, where as “up-dos” portray a formal, evening look.

Bridal Hair Don’ts:

  • Don’t shampoo hair the day of the wedding; it styles best if shampooed the day before.
  • Deep conditioning treatments should not be used within 4 days of the wedding, as hair would not style well if over-conditioned.
  • Do not have any chemical treatments the day of the wedding; that is not the time for surprises.
  • If you have a round shaped face, try not to do something that has width or too much volume; these suit long face cuts best.
  • Reflect your personality in your hairstyle, but don’t be a fashion victim.
  • Try not to choose too much of an intricate hairstyle, as they are often delicate and wont hold up for too long, plus too many hairpins can hurt.
  • If the back top of your gown is detailed or you would like to show the embellishments, do not wear your hair down, as it will take away from the style.
  • Don’t wear your hair longer than the veil.
  • If you and your fiancé are closer in height, don’t pick a hairstyle that adds inches to your height; you might look taller than him.
  • Do not use the portrait session as the “dress rehearsal”. There should actually be a “test run” for your hairstyle when you do your portrait.
